How does it work?

The lab compares the tissue samples from the mother, the child, and the man to see what special characteristics – known as “genetic markers” – the child shares with the mother and the man who may be the father. These tests are very accurate in showing whether or not the man is the biological father of a child.

How accurate is it?

For a positive paternity test result, when the biological mother has taken part in the test, we would expect to see at least 99.9999% probability for inclusion as the biological father. For a negative result, in other words the man is excluded as the biological father, the percentage probability would be zero.
